Are the stains on your mugs and cups from drinking coffee and tea simply too tough to clean easily or even when using the dishwasher?
The solution is baking soda. It is easy to clean coffee cups and mugs and make them look like new. It is an inexpensive and natural product with many uses around the house in addition to baking.
For example, you can deodorize the refrigerator with baking soda or smother grease fires with it. And, of course, it is very effective to clean coffee stains on porcelain mugs and cups.
What is baking soda?
- It is a sodium bicarbonate, a natural substance that maintains the pH balance.
- It neutralizes both acids and bases which is why it eliminates odors instead of simply “covering them up.”
- In cooking, baking soda releases carbon dioxide when heated. This causes cookies, breads or cakes to rise.
- It also acts as a very mild abrasive cleaner perfect for removing stains from coffee mugs and cups. It also removes stains from sinks, counter tops and even fine china.
For stubborn coffee stains in cups, follow these simple steps:
- Wear gloves, highly recommended.
- Baking soda can be rough on your hands so take appropriate precaution.
- Measure one teaspoon into a cup to be cleaned.
- Add a few drops or about a teaspoon of water.
- The solution will turn mushy but will not dissolve completely which is exactly what you want to happen.
- Use a non-abrasive sponge to scrub the cup until the stains are gone.
- Baking soda does not scratch porcelain mugs or cups.
- Rinse thoroughly with water.
- If after rinsing spots remain, redo previous steps.
- Alternatively, try soaking the cup in a baking soda and water solution for several hours, then scrub gently. Place 1 teaspoon in empty cup, fill with very hot water, add 1 teaspoon more baking soda. Cover and let stand for 6 to 8 hours.
- When you are done cleaning, your cups and mugs should like very clean and almost new!
Obviously, in case of doubt about using quick cleaning tips that do not intend to offer any guarantee for removal of stains of any kind, by all means contact a professional cleaning service. Or, if applicable, contact the manufacturer. However, for many people, quick tips work well and provide helpful solutions to normal problems such as coffee stains.
Now that you have a clean mug, let’s drink a cup of French Vanilla gourmet coffee!
